LI Schools Using Breathalyzers at Prom

In an attempt to deter underage drinking before the prom, several Long Island high schools have turned to using breath tests to detect alcohol usage.

According to a Newsday article:

Long Island students face suspensions for drinking, and seniors are barred from graduation ceremonies, officials say. Some districts call police when a student is found with alcohol on his or her breath.

While Island Trees does not use these alcohol-detection devices, school administrators do greet each student and date at the catering hall door, Superintendent Charles Murphy told Patch.

"If the student is suspected of drinking, their parents are called to pick them up. We have banned students from graduation if the students do not comply with our school administrators and are out of control at the prom. We hope it never has to get to this point."
