More Than 1,800 Tickets Issued On LI During Special Enforcement Period

State police issued hundreds of tickets during "Speed Week," and also arrested more than a dozen drivers for DWI.

LONG ISLAND, NY — New York State Troopers issued more than 1,800 tickets on Long Island during a special "Speed Week" enforcement last week.

"Speed Week" was conducted from Aug. 15 through 21 across the state. Troopers targeted speeding violations and other unsafe driving behaviors, and issued multiple tickets. Across the state, troopers issued 25,199 tickets, including 14,008 for speeding.

During the August 2021 Speed Week detail, State Police issued 32,922 total tickets, including 18,358 for speeding. Last year, "Speed Week" lasted for nine days instead of seven.

As part of this enforcement detail, Troopers targeted speeding and aggressive drivers across the state. Troopers watched for impaired and distracted drivers, vehicle occupants who were not properly buckled up, and drivers who violated the Move Over law, which requires motorists to exercise extreme caution when passing emergency vehicles that are stopped in or on the side of the road.

On Long Island, troopers issued 758 tickets for speeding, 85 for distracted driving, 79 for child restrain/seat belt violations and 12 for Move Over violations. They also made 18 arrests for DWI. Including other violations, troopers issued 1,879 tickets on Long Island during the week-long enforcement.
