NY 6th Senate District: Thomas Faces Challenge From Coll

The former NYPD officer is seeking to unseat the two-term senator and lawyer.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — In the race to represent New York's 6th Senate District, incumbent Kevin Thomas is fending off a challenge from James Coll.

Thomas, a Democrat, was first elected to the state Senate in 2018, and is running for his third term in office. He is the first Indian-American to serve in the state legislature. Before going into politics, Thomas was an attorney with the New York Legal Assistance Group.

His Republican challenger, Coll, is a retired New York Police Department officer, where he worked for more than 20 years. He was a responder on Sept. 11, and received 18 medals for service during his years in the department. He is currently an adjunct professor of history at Nassau Community College.

The 6th Senate District includes Bethpage, East Meadow, Farmingdale, Franklin Square, Garden City, Garden City South, Hempstead, Hicksville, Island Trees, Lakeview, Levittown, Malverne, Massapequa, Old Bethpage, Plainedge, Salisbury, Seaford, Uniondale, Wantagh and West Hempstead.
