Prosecutors Want Santos Sentencing To Go Forward Next Month: US Atty.

George Santos' lawyers are seeking a six-month delay in sentencing for his federal fraud case.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY—The federal prosecutors want the sentence for George Santos to go forward as scheduled next month.

The disgraced former congressman is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 7 following a guilty plea last summer to fraud, campaign finance and embezzlement charges.

Santos' lawyers want a six-month delay for their client to earn some money toward the $600,000 owed in restitution and forfeiture, ABC7 said.

"Allowing Santos to stave off sentencing specifically to monetize his infamy would send a message to the public that crime pays," U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Breon Peace wrote a letter on Tuesday to Judge Joanna Seybert.

Peace said the Court should hold Santos "accountable like any other American that breaks the law and move expeditiously to sentencing."

There wasn't a specific timetable for the judge to respond to Peace's letter, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's office said.
