State Aid Increased for Levittown and Island Trees Schools

Both the Levittown and Island Trees School Districts will receive an increased amount of state aid in 2013-14, Senator Kemp Hannon announced in a release Wednesday.

The Levittown School District will receive an increase of $4.93 million or 10.3 percent, while Island Trees will receive an increase of about 6.4 percent, the release said.

Long Island school districts will receive a collective $121 million increase in school aid, based on the just-passed State budget for 2013-14.

“These are especially good increases in light of the state’s fiscal crisis, in which the state is keeping its own spending increases to under 2%,” said Hannon.

Island Trees Superintendent Charles Murphy said that without the aid, the District would be forced to cut programs and services from the budget.

"After four years of significant school aid reductions, we welcome an increase to our school aid," Murphy said. "Over this time frame, the district absorbed millions of dollars of state aid reductions and had to pare back in many areas to get through this very difficult time."

"I hope this new aid increase is a sign of a recovering economy and good things to come for New York school districts," Murphy said.
