Street Named For Nassau Police Chief, Who Died Of 9/11-Related Cancer

BETHPAGE, NY — Nassau County Police Department's Chief of Patrol Kevin Canavan, who died of 9/11-related cancer, was honored with the street naming ceremony.

Canavan, the three-star Chief of Patrol, who had nearly four decades in law enforcement including as a helicopter pilot in the county's Aviation Unit.

"Chief of Patrol Kevin Canavan Way" will be at the Nassau County Aviation Unit in Bethpage.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand and Tax Receiver Jeff Pravato joined Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman for the street dedication.

This is part of an overarching program to memorialize all Nassau County Police Officers who died in the line of duty in honor of the Nassau County Police Department’s 100th Anniversary.

“Chief Canavan gave his life because of his bravery and undeterred commitment to serving the public and will always be remembered as a true American Hero," Hand said. "As Kevin battled cancer, he continued to work for the residents of Nassau County, offering his vast experience to ensure the success of department operations. He was an inspiration and a worthy role model for those who will carry on his mission.
