Aldi Mum on Details of New Lindenhurst Location

Officials will only confirm that the new Lindy locale will open in early 2013.

German supermarket chain Aldi has confirmed that it’ll be a in early 2013, but has remained tight-lipped about exactly where in the community it’ll open.

A couple of readers and residents of Lindenhurst have there’s an application on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for Aldi to build said location at 455 Park Avenue – the same shopping center where Rite-Aid and the LA Fitness center currently are.

Regulated freshwater wetlands are located to the West and South of the shopping center; hence, the DEC application, which, according to the DEC site, was made by MLO Great South Bay LLC.

The project description reads, “The applicant proposes to construct a 17,673-square-foot building for an Aldi Food Market that’ll have associated curbs, loading dock, light poles and landscaped areas within the existing paved parking lot of an existing shopping center on a 72-acre site.

“The proposal includes a reduction in the amount of impervious surfaces on site, and a stormwater treatment system that’ll serve to remove contaminants from the stormwater flow.”

The NYS DEC’s State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) determined the project “will not have a significant impact on the environment” and a negative declaration is on file.

However, Aldi officials declined comment on the speculated location and the associated DEC application, as well.

“At this time…exact location and date are still to be determined,” according to Bruce Persohn, Aldi South Windsor division vice president.

“All other details aren’t being released to the public at this time,” he added.

What Aldi would comment about was Lindenhurst is the next Long Island location, and that it joins the location in that opened last August and the one that opened last week in .

Persohn said Lindenhurst was chosen because of population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns.

“We want to be conveniently based where Aldi shoppers are located,” he said.

The new Lindy location will continue the chain’s tradition of carrying a selection of lower-priced, private-label brands. These include its Lacura high-end skin care line, Moser-Roth premium chocolates and Fit and Active Better-for-You products.

To further keep prices low the retailer doesn't accept credit cards, and it uses what's known as a cart-deposit system that requires shoppers to insert a quarter to obtain a cart.

Shoppers will also find better-known national brands, as well, but that assortment continually changes. Persohn noted offers “opportunity buys” in a section near the back of the store that are available to shoppers “while supplies last.”

Persohn also pointed out Aldi’s commitment to quality. “All Aldi products are backed by our double guarantee. If for any reason a customer isn’t 100 percent satisfied with any Aldi product, we’ll gladly replace the product and refund the purchase price.”

Aldi entered the New York Metropolitan market with a Rego Park, Queens store that opened in early 2011. It also opened a store in the Bronx in late 2011.

“In 2012 Aldi anticipates opening more than 80 stores, further expanding our footprint within our newer, existing markets,” Persohn said.

Aldi is a division of global operator Aldi Group, Muelheim, Germany, and currently has about 1,215 stores in 32 states, generating annual United States sales of an estimated $7.3 billion.
