Gone Fishin': OLPH Student Reels in Win at Local Fishing Tourney

Young Robert Fischer showed off his fishing prowess and scored a second-place win in the Children's Division of the recent Babylon Autumn Surf Fishing Cup.

Fischer, a 10-year-old student at in Lindenhurst, won for reeling in an 11.5-pound blue fish during the that took place , from 5 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Sunday, in the waters from the western border of to the Sore Thumb at .

The young fisherman is no stranger to competitions, or winning, according to his family. He placed in last year’s South Shore Surf Classic and last year's Village of Lindenhurst (this year's derby was canceled due to ).

In fact, the following weekend Fischer placed fifth in the blue fish division in this year's South Shore Surf Classic, where there's no children's division. He placed in a field of 350 men who also entered the competition, his family said.

For his efforts he was awarded more than $100 in fishing tackle.

But before that Fischer was recognized along with the other winners of the Babylon fishing tourney during a ceremony following competition near the weigh station in the East end of the parking lot.

Among those winners were Fischer's uncle, Billy Fischer, owner of Big Fischer Custom Lures. He won first place in the Striped Bass Division with a 23-pounder, while friend Brett Rainer won third place for a 19.5-pound striper and 12-pound blue, according to the family.

The competition, which was hosted by The Paumanok Surf Casters at Town of Babylon beaches, was open to residents, as well as to non-residents.
