Cyclist Critically Inured After Hit-And-Run Crash: Police

A driver was arrested after leaving the scene of a car crash that critically injured a cyclist on Long Island, police say.

WYANDANCH, NY — A woman was arrested for leaving the scene of a car crash that critically injured a cyclist on Friday night on Long Island, according to Suffolk County police.

Bertha Dantant was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry westbound on Irving Avenue in Wyandanch when the vehicle struck a bicyclist heading northbound on Lewis Street as he was making a right turn onto eastbound Irving Avenue around 10:07 p.m., police said.

The cyclist, James Lantero, 51, of Ronkonkoma, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip in critical condition, police said.

Major Case Unit detectives charged Dantant, 49, of Wyandanch, with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious physical injury, and the Toyota was impounded, police said.

She was held overnight at the First Precinct and arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday, police said.
