District Honoring Lindenhurst Varsity Baseball Coach
The Lindenhurst School District will officially rename the middle school field after Mike Canobbio on Saturday.
The is bestowing a top honor on Saturday afternoon to Varsity Baseball Head Coach - someone who Superintendent Richard Nathan called "one of the most successful coaches" in Lindenhurst sports history.
The field is officially renaming the Michael J. Canobbio Field in a scheduled for at 1 p.m. at the field.
Nathan made note of the official renaming ceremony at the most recent Board of Education Community Forum at on night.

However, the decision was last June at the ’s to rename the field after Canobbio, who's coached the LHS baseball team for 35 years - almost 36 now with the start of the .
Canobbio – the banquet’s master of ceremonies – was also named the Male Coach of the Year, and received an award from his team.

“To the Board of Education, thank you so much and, well, you’ve floored me,” Canobbio said at following the announcement. “When a coach wins an award, it’s a team award. It just tells you what good baseball players we’ve had here at Lindenhurst.”
In 2010 led the Bulldogs to the Suffolk AA title and the Long Island and New York State championships.
Last year he became the fifth coach in Suffolk County history to win 500 career games, as the clinched its second straight Suffolk County League II .
Overall Canobbio has led the Bulldogs to 10 championships in his tenure at the LHS. He’s also coached more than 160 All League players, more than 40 All County players, 10 All State players and 15 Golden Glove winners.
In addition to coaching the Bulldogs, he's also been the director of the 's Summer Recreation Program for more than 30 years, noted Nathan.
Canobbio also received the the Lindenhurst Republican Club’s Person of the Year Award at the organization's last .
“Thank you very much for this honor. I couldn’t have done it without a great team at home, too,” he said at the time.
And now this May Canobbio - a Lindy resident and graduate, and a retired Lindy sixth-grade teacher - will be inducted into the , along with eight others including former Lindehurst wrestling coach Joe Russo.
