Girls Basketball Coach Let Go By Copiague High: Report
Kia Wright, Copiauge High's girls basketball team coach, who was adored by players and parents alike, has been let go, Newsday reports.
COPIAUGE, NY — Over a dozen supporters pleaded with the Copiague school board on Wednesday night to reinstate Kia Wright, a beloved girls' varsity basketball coach at Copiague High, who was let go by the district last month, according to a report by Newsday.
According to the outlet, Wright said she was told by the school’s athletic director, William Bennett, that her dismissal was a consequence of taking players to see a basketball game through her nonprofit, Kwiet Storm Inc., with permission from all parents.
However, Newday said it viewed a letter from Copiague Superintendent Kathleen Bannon, where she told Wright that the decision was "based upon the significant concerns regarding your judgment, as evidenced by your most recent end-of-season coaching evaluation and the counseling memo you received in January."
