Hugo Mascari, Village Assessor, Dies at 85

Mayor Tom Brennan remembers Mascari, who'll be reposed today at Lindenhurst Funeral Home. His funeral Mass at OLPH Church is set for Wednesday morning at 11 a.m.

Hugo Mascari, Lindenhurst Village assessor and former Village trustee, passed away on Sunday. He was 85.

This is the second Lindenhurst official to have passed in the past week, according to Anthony Manetta, Village spokesperson who shared the news on Tuesday with Lindenhurst Patch.

Roy Mathison, former Lindenhurst mayor, passed away last week at the age of 79.

"It is with further sadness that I announce the passing of yet another Village icon, Hugo Mascari, former Trustee and recently, Village assessor. He left us on February 19," he wrote in an e-mail to Patch.

"He was a great guy," Mayor Tom Brennan told Patch on Tuesday. "He has a lovely family, too."

Mascari is survived by his wife, Carmela, his four children - Zera, Terri Aller, Louise and Edward - and five grandchildren - Eddie, Bill, Nick, Alexandra and Matthew.

According to Brennan, Mascari was a deputy county clerk and an assessor for the Village of Lindenhurst, Village of Babylon and Village of Amityville.

Born in Brooklyn, Mascari later graduated from Lindenhurst High School and was a World War II veteran.

According to Village Shawn Cullinane, he also served as a Village trustee in the 1970s and 1980s.

"He was a long-time Lindenhurst resident who was involved in a lot of things in the community - such as the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club, the World War Vets Club and the Lindenhurst Historical Society," Cullinane told Patch on Tuesday.

Mascari is being reposed at the Lindenhurst Funeral Home Tuesday, February 21, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 9:30 pm. He was also reposed Monday evening, as well.

His funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m.
