LHS AP Physics Students Attend Special Symposium

Event Gave Students the Opportunity to Explore College, Graduate School Opportunities

Ten of Lindenhurst High School’s top AP Physics students recently attended the weekend “Cosmic Pathways” Physics Symposium in New York City. The special event is designed to inspire students to explore how physics can open doors to college, graduate school, and careers in STEM. The symposium was hosted by the City College of New York and brought together students ranging from those in high school to graduate school to collaborate, share research, and learn from experts in their respective fields. The symposium also provided an opportunity for Lindenhurst student Armina Yetimoglu to present her award-winning research to a crowd of professionals and college staff.

In addition to Armina, the Lindenhurst delegation included Ayman Alami, Zoraiz Jamiel, Aiden Nunez, Daniel (Seb) Parades, Angelina Parente, Ajay Rambarra, Kerem Satar, Tuana Yetimoglu, and Crystal Wu. These students participated in a variety of workshops on topics including:

  • Symphonies in Space: Listening to the Universe with Gravitational Waves
  • Exploring Wind Turbines and Solar Panels for a Better Environment
  • Pulsed Power Inertial Fusion
  • Flight Dynamics: Exploring the Impact of Wing Design on Fighter Jet Speed

Additionally, Armina presented her research project on aerodynamics, titled “From Skies to the Tracks,” which received glowing feedback from both the audience and symposium staff, showcasing the talent and dedication of Lindenhurst’s students.

The event also provided students with the opportunity to meet representatives from various colleges and physics societies, fostering connections that could shape their future academic and career paths.

“On the train ride home, I asked the students if this was something worth doing again next year, and I got a resounding ‘Yes!’” said Lindenhurst High School science teacher Mr. Smith. “Some even said it was the best field trip they’ve ever been on.”

The day was long and demanding. Students met at the LIRR station at 7:00 a.m. and did not return until 7:45 p.m. For some students, it was also the first day of Ramadan, adding an extra layer of challenge as they fasted until sunset. Despite these hurdles, the students’ excitement and engagement made the experience unforgettable.
