Lindenhurst Cleanup Efforts Continue Following Irene

Mayor asks non-residents to stay north of Montauk Highway.

Lindenhurst officials were out in the Village Monday assessing the damage from Hurricane Irene as cleanup crews removed downed trees and other debris as part of the effort to help residents regain a sense of normalcy.

Although flood waters began to retreat and power was restored to homes and businesses in the community, Mayor Tom Brennan said the dock at the Lindenhurst Marina at the end of South Wellwood Avenue suffered significant damage.

According to Brennan, the part of the dock facing the Great South Bay was heavily damaged, but portions along the canal side weathered the storm far better.

“The docks will be closed until further notice,” he said. “The older portion sustained much of the damage but the newer side that we had fixed up recently is in excellent shape.”

He could not give a timeframe on when the dock area would reopen or when repairs would begin. Those with boats still at the dock are allowed to access and place their vessels back in the water.

The biggest challenge facing cleanup crews from the Village’s Department of Public Works is downed power lines. Brennan said as a safety precaution crews are not permitted to clear trees until they receive approval from . In some parts of Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst, this may be delaying cleanup efforts and restoration of power.

As of 3:30 p.m. Monday, LIPA was reporting 119 customers without power in North Lindenhurst and 1,160 customers in Lindenhurst Village without power.

In touring the Village, Brennan reported that flooding was a major factor along the waterfront areas and downed trees were seen throughout Lindenhurst.

He encouraged local residents needing trees removed to call the Village at 957-7520.
