Lindenhurst Deli Owner Cited As Local Hero: Here’s Why

LINDENHURST — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

This submission comes from Karin Rosebrock who nominated Steven Zahran of Lindenhurst.

Rosebrock told Patch that Zahran should be recognized as a hero after tirelessly supporting his community with food during the pandemic.

How do you know the local hero?

He’s the owner of the 35th Street Family Deli.

What does the local hero do?

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

During Covid, when everything was closed early and really open for delivery, Steven not only stayed open during the day, but he reopened at night to provide delicious food to Lindenhurst and the surrounding areas. While everyone was cutting staff, Steven brought in additional employees and pretty much his entire family. Every day, a special secret menu full of gourmet choices not typical for a deli was put on social media, and they reopened to take food orders for delivery.

They delivered as far as Western Nassau and as far east as East Islip. The food was amazing as the 35th Street Family Deli is a hidden gem. Steven is a hero because, in such a difficult time, he went out of his way — sometimes without sleep —to bring and keep Lindenhurst together, safe and in a positive mindset. Steven was truly a hero and a ray of sunshine during a dark, dark time.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

He works tirelessly, sometimes 18 hours a day, to prepare incredible food for the people of Lindenhurst. He is always positive and friendly. He’s an amazing chef and goes out of his way to help anyone who needs it. He doesn’t do anything he does for recognition, he does it to keep Lindenhurst together He’s truly a gem.
