Lindenhurst Eyes Evacuation for Residents South of Montauk
Mayor Tom Brennan says village will make final call on evacuation ahead of Hurricane Irene on Friday afternoon.
As of Friday morning Lindenhurst Village officials were looking at evacuating residents south of Montauk Highway, including those in the Venetian Shores area.
That’s according to Mayor Tom Brennan, who said the final determination will be made Friday afternoon.
“We’re discussing evacuation, and it’s a matter of speaking with Bob Cozzetto, [with Lindenhurst Schools], to see what time we’d be able to open up Lindenhurst High School for residents to be brought there,” said Brennan.

Cozzetto said at of village, school, fire and police officials at Lindenhurst Village Hall that opening the high school as an evacuation center would be in line with Red Cross directives.
“It’s in coordination with plans set by the Red Cross, which might choose to activate larger evacuation centers farther inland, at larger high schools,” he said on August 25.

The coordination an evacuation of residents from their homes will be between the village and the Lindenhurst Fire Department, plus the Suffolk Police First Precinct which will provide additional security at the high school as it supplements the village’s Public Safety and Code Enforcement officers throughout the hurricane.
For those residents in the Venetian Shores area, Brennan said there should be coordination of efforts with the Town of Babylon, which technically governs that section of the Lindenhurst.
“We do serve them in the fire district, so we would help those residents evacuate,” he said.
As to whether the evacuation will be mandatory or voluntary, the mayor said that’ll also be decided this afternoon.
When the village makes that decision, Brennan said the First Precinct will be able to send out a reverse 911 call to alert residents of any evacuation plans.
