Lindenhurst HS Increases Security after Receiving Halloween Bomb Threat

Second bomb threat message in as many weeks prompts school to step up security measures on Monday, though the school's Safe Halloween event for later in the afternoon is still a go, superintendent says.

This parents, students and faculty will notice increased safety measures at the due to the recent discovery of another dated for Monday.

“This past week words describing a threat to our high school that was to take place on Monday, October 31, were found,” Lindenhurst in a statement on Sunday night.

“While we do not believe this to be a credible threat, as a precautionary measure we will implement emergency procedures on Monday, October 31.”

The disclosure of the threat and the stepped-up security measures were outlined in back-to-back School Messenger phone calls – one from Nathan and one from LHS Principal Dan Giordano – to parents on Sunday night.

And according to one parent with whom Lindenhurst Patch spoke, the security measures that were outlined were similar to those taken when a message referencing a bomb threat on October 18 was found typed into a scientific calculator at the LHS a little more than two weeks ago.

That message caused the district to call in Suffolk Police and to take precautionary measures such as allowing no one to enter the LHS until 6:45 a.m., then only allowing entry via the main entrance; restricting hallway passes; and requiring students to have their IDs at all times.

It also caused the district to cancel all after-school activities on October 17.

The LHS was halfway through its on October 17 when 16-year-old student was found to be the one who allegedly typed the threatening message.

She was , charged with falsely reporting an incident and the following day at First District Court in Central Islip where she pleaded not guilty to the felony charge.

This time, according to Nathan, while “the health, safety and welfare of our students always remain a priority,” and while the district is “working with the Suffolk County Police Department as they investigate this matter,” the school will move forward with the annual Safe Halloween on Monday afternoon.

“ will occur as scheduled on Monday, , at 4 p.m. at Lindenhurst High School,” the superintendent noted in the same statement on Sunday night.
