Lindenhurst Superintendent: High School is ‘Safe’

Superintendent Richard Nathan says the school 'remains safe' following a search Monday morning that was caused by a Halloween bomb threat the school received last week; Safe Halloween Monday afternoon will go on.

The district is assuring parents, students and faculty that the is safe and secure after receiving a last week that was dated for on Monday.

“The building has been searched, and remains safe,” said in an updated statement on Monday morning.

Last week the district discovered “words describing a threat to our high school that was to take place on Monday, October 31,” he said.

It caused the district to increase safety measures and implement emergency procedures this morning that were outlined in two School Messenger calls to parents on Sunday night.

Procedures included allowing no one to enter the school until 6:45 a.m. and requiring students to have their IDs at all times.

And after the school was searched this morning, it appeared to be business as usual, with parents and school buses out in full force dropping off students.

In fact, Monday afternoon’s Safe Halloween remains on schedule, as well.

“ will occur as scheduled on Monday, , at 4 p.m. at Lindenhurst High School,” Nathan noted.

However, “the health, safety and welfare of our students always remain a priority,” reiterated the superintendent, who added that the district is working with the Suffolk County Police Department as it investigates the matter.

According to the SCPD, First Squad detectives were notified by the school district on October 21 about the threat that was found in the school, dated for Halloween Monday.

This marks the second time in as many weeks that the district's had to notify Suffolk Police about a bomb threat.

A bomb threat on October 18 was found typed into a scientific calculator at the LHS a little more than two weeks ago.

That message caused the school to involve police and take the same precautionary measures as it did on Monday. It also caused the district to cancel all after-school activities on October 17.

The LHS was halfway through its on October 17 when 16-year-old student was found to be the one who allegedly typed the threatening message.

She was , charged with falsely reporting an incident and the following day at First District Court in Central Islip where she pleaded not guilty to the felony charge.
