Lindy Motorcyclist with Several Warrants Arrested

Motorcyclist nabbed by police at the intersection of Indiana and Sunrise in Lindenhurst for excessive speeding and outstanding warrants.

A 21-year-old Lindenhurst man driving a motorcycle was nabbed for excessive speeding Tuesday night at the intersection of North Indiana Avenue and East Sunrise Highway.

Joseph Gervasio was driving the motorcycle east on Sunrise at a speed of more than 100 miles per hour, said Suffolk County Police.

Police arrested Gervasio for seven outstanding warrants, and also issued him several summonses for violations of vehicle and traffic laws observed by the arresting officers. Police charged Gervasio with aggravated unlicensed operation, third degree, and reckless driving.

The SCPD said a motorcyclist entered onto Sunrise Highway near Carleton Avenue in Islip Terrace at approximately 8:40 p.m. on May 31. Police Officer Glen Ritchie observed that the driver was traveling at approximately 95 miles per hour.

Officer Ritchie attempted to follow the suspect, but as the officer approached, police said, the driver sped off. Officer Ritchie estimated the motorcyclist was traveling at approximately 140 miles per hour near the intersection of Route 231, where the driver of the motorcycle began weaving in and out of traffic.

Officer Ritchie, with assistance from Officer Lary Ruiz – both from the SCPD Aggressive Driving Task Force – blocked the motorcycle’s path when the driver became caught up in traffic at a red light at Sunrise and Indiana in Lindenhurst at about 9:15 p.m.

Upon stopping Gervasio at the intersection, the officers determined he also had several warrants out for his arrest and had a suspended driver’s license. In addition, according to the SCPD, the motorcycle he’d been operating was uninsured, unregistered and had improper license plates.

Gervasio was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip June 1.
