LIRR: Entangled Clothes Seen at Fault in Escalator Incident

Railroad official says preliminary investigation reveals that Irene Bernatzky's garments became caught in escalator's treads after her fall at Lindenhurst train station on Tuesday.

MTA Police have found that the clothes of the 88-year-old Lindenhurst woman became caught in the escalator following her fall.

", of Lindenhurst, died after falling down the escalator, and her clothes became entangled in the escalator's treads," according to MTA LIRR spokesperson Sam Zambuto.

This finding was based on the into what Zambuto called "yesterday's tragic escalator accident at the LIRR’s Lindenhurst station."

He reiterated that the MTA Police are continuing their investigation, and the escalator remains out of service for inspection and testing.

"The escalator was last inspected in early February following a minor repair," he added, but he didn't give any further details about what the repair was at presstime.

Zambuto also said that no other information about the off-duty LIRR assistant conductor at the station who attempted to assist Bernatzky at the time of the incident would be made available while the investigation is on-going.
