LMS Students Win Essay Contest on Money Matters

Ridgewood sponsored the contest for Lindy middle schoolers to teach them the importance of saving money for the future.

Three Lindy students were recently recognized after winning an essay contest for Lindenhurst Middle School scholars that was sponsored by local branch of Ridgewood Savings Bank.

Emma Gillam took first place in the Ridgewood Essay Contest, whose theme was The Importance of Saving Money for the Future. Second place went to Julia Robinson, while third place was snagged by Charles Hager.

In addition, representatives from Ridgewood Savings’ local branch recently visited the LMS family and consumer science classes to give a special lesson on money and budgeting.

Students learned about preparing a budget, the concept of savings and setting goals, as well as the importance of using a bank. Various types of savings and checking accounts, plus money markets and certificates of deposit (CDs), were discussed.

The bank reps gave an example of saving for a prom – an event to which young people could relate.
