Meet Mae, Shelter Pet of the Week
Looking for a new family pet? This sweet pup may be the right one for you.
Mae has risen above a horrific start in life. This emaciated, yet sweet Pit/Lab-mix puppy came to the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter suffering from a severe case of demodectic mange, virtually bald and covered with open sores.
According to the staff at the shelter, Mae’s condition – Demodex – is a preventable and treatable skin condition. It’s not contagious, but quite common in neglected, short-haired dogs living outdoors, staff members said.
Last spring someone decided to dispose of her - literally. A cruel person stuffed her in a plastic bag and tossed her outside a West Babylon business as if she were trash, according to the shelter.

When Mae arrived at the ToB shelter, she was showered with TLC and treatment immediately.
With medicated baths, antibiotics, real food and lots of love, Mae began to transform. Her coat is now coming back nicely, and her “sparkling spirit” has begun to shine, the shelter said.

In fact, staff members have seen her slip into the role of the shelter's "Ms. Congeniality."
“Mae loves people and other dogs,” the shelter said. “She plays well with others – so well, that she’s become the reliable dog-tester dog.”
She even buddies up in the kennel, with another Pit named Foxy – her BFF.
Staff members are happy with all of the positive changes they’ve seen in Mae, and they’re just as eager as she is to find a forever home where she can buddy up with her new family.
“Trust us – Mae will remember and appreciate everything someone nice does for her,” the shelter said.
For more information about Mae, call the TOB Animal Shelter at 631-643-9270, e-mail the shelter or visit the website. Her ID number is 94111.
