AMITYVILLE, NY — A new bridal shop is open for business on Long Island, and just in time for wedding season.

Cida’s Bridal Atelier celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and the Babylon community on May 1.

The shop—which owner Maria Scavo describes as a "lovely, quaint cottage" in Amityville's historic district"—was the natural next step after her home-based business kept growing.

Scavo discovered her passion for fabrics around the age of five when her grandmother sewed her very first rag doll, she wrote in her blog. She remembers creating a wardrobe for the doll out of fabric scraps and 20 years later, she found her self designing clothing and accessories for her daughter.

What began as a hobby making clothing for her family slowly grew into a full-fledged business as Scavo began making "eco-conscious" hand bags for friends and family. Eventually, she made some extra bags to sell to local shops and that's when she realized her passion could become her profession.

"One day, I brought them to a high-end fashion boutique," Scavo recalls. "While there, I was also asked to reproduce a garment by the dozen. When I delivered my work to the boutique, they sold out within three hours."

Since then, Scavo's business—which has been renamed from Cida’s Sew Shop to Cida’s Bridal Atelier— has grown into a full-service bridal shop specializing in customed-designed dresses for brides and bridal parties.

Scavo also offers women’s and children’s clothing, alterations, hand bags, aprons and other gifts, home décor such as pillows, window treatments, some upholstery and custom items for special occasions including sweet 16s, baby showers and proms.

Cida’s Bridal Atelier is located at 9A Ireland Pl. in Amityville. The shop is open on Tuesdays from noon to 8 p.m.; Thursdays from 1 to 6 p.m.; Fridays from noon to 5 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.
