New Kava Bar Opens On Long Island

A new bar on Long Island offers a different kind of "buzz" from non-alcoholic kava, a root from the Pacific said to relieve anxiety.

LINDENHURST, NY — There's a new bar on Long Island, and it doesn't sell alcohol.

Island Kava celebrated the grand opening of its third Long Island location on Monday in Lindenhurst on Hoffman Avenue.

Community members joined owner Ryan LaFlare, a Lindenhurst native and retired UFC fighter, for a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local elected officials, including Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Lindenhurst's Deputy Mayor, RJ Renna.

Instead of hard liquor and beer on tap, Island Kava offers a different kind of buzz with kava tea, made from a root native to the Pacific islands.

Often used in kava ceremonies, kava contains mild psychoactive compounds, which boast anxiety-relieving, analgesic and sedative effects.

The menu offers canned kava mocktails, instant kava sticks, a variety of loose-leaf teas, and more.

Island Kava Lindenhurs is open Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 1 a.m. and Sundays through Thursday from noon to midnight.

The bar is located at 83 W Hoffman Ave.

Island Kava also has locations in Patchogue and Massapequa.
