Photos: LMS Field Is Renamed after Varsity Baseball Coach
Take a look at the highlights of Saturday's ceremony honoring Lindenhurst Varsity Baseball Head Coach Mike Canobbio.
When the field was renamed the Michael J. Canobbio Field on , it was only the second time in the history of that the Board of Education and the central administration has gotten together and renamed a field after a key contributor to the schools and the community.
"In the 170-year history of the Lindenhurst School District this is only the second time that we've renamed something," BOE President Ed Murphy, Jr. told the crowd filled with family, friends, neighbors, former and current athletes, former and current coaches, colleagues and and officials.
"We officially declare it the Michael J. Canobbio Field," said Murphy, and with that Superintendent Richard Nathan and Athletic Director Anthony Amesti unveiled the new sign that now sits atop the scoreboard at the baseball field at the LMS.

This honor was officially announced by the district and the BOE at the ’s , and finally took place on this year.
"It's overwhelming to see our family name on the field," told the crowd after he thanked not only his family, friends, fellow coaches and colleagues, but also school officials and the community for the honor.

He said that without such talented players, talented coaching staff, the support of the administration and the BOE and terrific feeder systems from Lindenhurst National and Lindenhurst Little Leagues, such success wouldn't be possible.
, a life-long Lindenhurst resident, Lindy alum and retired Lindenhurst sixth-grade teacher, is entering his 36th year coaching the Bulldogs, which he led to the Suffolk AA title and the Long Island and New York State championships in 2010.
Last year he became the fifth coach in Suffolk County history to win 500 career games, as the clinched its second straight Suffolk County League II .
This May he'll be inducted into the , along with eight others including former Lindehurst wrestling coach Joe Russo.
