Previously Convicted Felon Sentenced After Loaded Handgun Bust: DA

A previously convicted felon received his prison sentence after pleading guilty to possessing a loaded 9mm handgun, Suffolk County DA says.

AMITYVILLE, NY — A previously convicted felon was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison on Friday for possession of a loaded handgun, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.

Tremayne Winfield, 39, of Amityville, was found guilty by a jury in June of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and related charges, the DA said.

According to evidence established at trial, Suffolk County police executed a search warrant at Winfield's residence on April 28, 2023, the DA said. When they entered the house, officers found Winfield inside with a loaded 9mm handgun with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition, the DA said.

On June 21, Winfield was found guilty after a jury trial heard before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins of one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C felony, and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, Class D felonies, the DA said.

According to the DA, Winfield was previously convicted of multiple felony offenses in Suffolk County including second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C violent felony, second-degree assault, a Class D felony, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class D felony and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.

"The sentence handed down to this defendant reflects the gravity of his offenses and our commitment to removing dangerous individuals from our streets," Tierney said. "We believe this outcome will deter others and contribute to the safety of our neighborhoods in Suffolk County."

Winfield was represented by Eric Besso who was not immediately available for comment.
