13-Year-Old Suffolk Bicyclist Dies From Injuries
The teen was struck by a car on Saturday evening, police say.
COPGIAGUE, NY — A 13-year-old bicyclist who was struck and critically injured by a car in Copiague on Saturday evening has died, Suffolk County police said.
Jose Luis Calderon, of Amityville, was riding a bicycle in the right lane of northbound Dixon Avenue, near Caboto Avenue, around 9:20 p.m. He then swerved into the northbound left lane and was struck by a 2008 Toyota Corolla, police said.
He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
A GoFundMe fundraiser was created to help financially support Jose's family. Its description said that he was known as a "loving son, brother, nephew, and friend to many."

The Toyota was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
