LINDENHURST, NY — In an effort to combat a "prevalent" problem of illegal wrong-way parking on Lindenhurst streets, the village has issued a public alert reminding drivers of proper parking laws and etiquette in Suffolk County.

In a press release issued by the Village of Lindenhurst on Thursday, village officials explained that on a two-way roadway, as well as on one-way roadways, vehicles stopped, standing, or parked must be facing in the direction of authorized traffic movement on the portion of the roadway on which the vehicle rests.

According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1203, and Lindenhurst Village Code, Chapter 185-83, “every vehicle stopped, standing or parked upon a two-way roadway shall be so stopped, standing or parked with the right-hand-wheels of such vehicle parallel to and within twelve inches (12”) of the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway,” officials wrote in the press release.

Village officials then explained that when someone parks their vehicle facing on-coming traffic, or parks against the flow of traffic, it's "unsightly" and more importantly, it puts the safety of everyone at risk.

In summary, the press release stated, "You must park parallel to and within twelve inches (12”) of, the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. If you park illegally against the flow of traffic, it is a parking violation and could result in a parking ticket starting at $75. Please be advised that the Lindenhurst Code Enforcement & Public Safety Officers enforce this traffic law, and will continue issuing summonses to violators"
