April 20: Seeking Commentary on Schools, Girls Lacrosse, City Council Meets

Get the scoop on what's happening in Long Beach each weekday.

We know, you’re down about the Knicks letting another winnable playoff game slip through their hands in Boston last night. Until Friday’s game, though, there’s plenty to look forward to in Long Beach and here on Patch. For starters, here's what you need to know today:

1. Patch is looking for outspoken members of the Long Beach community to share their thoughts about the school budget and school board elections leading up to the May 17 vote. If you have something to say, we’ve got the platform to make sure your voice is heard. To participate in writing columns, call or send an email to Patch editor Joseph Kellard at (516) 408-8241 or josephk@patch.com.

2. Sports fans, why not take in a game of Long Beach girls’ lacrosse when they host Locust Valley at 10 a.m. at the middle school?

3. The Long Beach City Council will hold a regular meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The council meets each month on the first and third Tuesday, but last night’s meeting was rescheduled to Wednesday due to the Passover holiday.

4. Later today, Patch will post a story about the latest developments and issues surrounding the case of four men arrested in a fracas outside a West End bar in January, and we’ll have a feature on a Long Beach artists group based on motherhood. Make sure you come back later.

5. Maybe you were too busy Tuesday to log on to Patch, so here are a couple of stories you may have missed: 1) Some Canals residents questioned the effectiveness of the newly installed bulkheads as their streets flood during heavy rain; 2) former Long Beach High School standout wrestler P.J. Gillespie is an All-American at Hofstra who has a plan to improve this summer.
