City Council to Vote on Emergency Service Billing Contract

The Long Beach City Council will vote on a resolution to renew a contract with MultiMed Billing Service for emergency ambulance billing and collection services, one of just two items on the Tuesday’s agenda.

A legislative memo accompanying the Oct. 2 resolution states that this service was last awarded in July 2008 to the Baldwinsville, N.Y.-based MultiMed Billing Service, which charges a fee of 10 percent of all funds collected.

“With this new contract, MultiMed is charging a fee of 6.5% of all monies collected, resulting in an increase of 3.5% in revenue to the City,” the memo reads. “The fees for Medicaid billing have also been reduced.”

The resolution states that Medicaid claims are the exception, which will be billed at $12 per claim “where Medicaid is the primary payer” and $5 per claim “where Medicaid is the secondary payer.”

The city received bids for this proposal in August and the contract was awarded to MultiMed Billing Service, the lowest bidder, which has provided this service to the city since 2000.
