Fagen's Trial Pushed Back to November

A pre-trial hearing for Long Beach City Councilman Michael Fagen is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 7, after he was originally expected to stand trial in September, a spokesman for the Nassau County Disrict Attorneys Office told Patch.

Fagen, who was indicted in February on charges that he illegally collected more than $14,000 in unemployment benefits, is due back in court Oct. 19.

The councilman, who was elected to a four-year term in 2009, was indicted on 38 counts of first-degree offering of a false instrument for filing, one count of third-degree grand larceny and one count of petit larceny. Fagen has pleaded not guilty.

Justice William Donnino has attempted to coax a settlement of the case that would not involve a trial. If convicted, Fagen faces up to seven years in prison.
