Fire Strikes Sandy-Damaged West End Home

A fire broke out at at Hurricane Sandy-damaged home in the West End early Friday morning.

At about 7:41 a.m., the Long Beach Fire Department was alerted to a house fire at 48 New Hampshire St. in the West End, and when firefighters arrived on the scene they found smoke pushing from the attic and roof area, according to LBFD Chief Richard Corbett.

“Once units made entry, a working fire was transmitted,” Corbett told Patch. “It was discovered that a mattress was burning and the floor was burned through to the first floor.”

Since the home was vacant due to damages caused by Hurricane Sandy in October and was supposed to be unoccupied, the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to respond to the scene, Corbett said.
There were no injuries reported and an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
