LBMS Student Wins Music Scholarship

Joshua Kapilian is the latest success to come out of the Long Beach music program.

For the second consecutive year, Long Beach High School’s Symphonic Choir performed at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

The ensemble was selected as part of the Concert Festival International Competition for young students around the world, organized by renowned pianists Vladimir Polezhayev and Yelena Polezhayev . The choir, which consists of 10th- through 12th-graders and is directed by Michael Capobianco, performed two selections: “Amor de Mi Alma,” composed by Z. Randall Stroope, and a choral arrangement of the Israeli folk song, “Hava Nagila,” arranged by Maurice Goldman.

Long Beach Middle School student Joshua Kapilian won a scholarship for summer music studies at the Usdan Center for the Performing Arts. His award was received from Nassau Music Educators Association based on an application he submitted. Joshua plays viola in the middle school orchestra and chamber orchestra, and also plays jazz piano in the jazz band and sings in the LBMS Singers. He has been selected to All-County ensembles many times and performed in concerts with these prominent groups of young musicians. Usdan, located in Melville, is a day camp dedicated to the arts. Joshua will attend for several weeks as he furthers his musical studies.

The annual districtwide Jazz Night was a great success on April 30, when the middle school jazz band, high school jazz lab, high school jazz choir and high school jazz ensemble were showcased. The event served as a celebration of jazz music through the decades as the students and their music instructors collaborated to continue what has become a Long Beach tradition for an audience of communitymembers.

Spring concerts are approaching for each of the school buildings and will feature talented performers of all ages. For the schedule, visit www.lbeach.org and view the district calendar.
