Little Leaguers Throw First Pitches

Thousands turn out for parade to kick off baseball season in Long Beach.

Some 800 Long Beach baseball players, ages K to eighth grade, gathered at the Lindell School last Saturday to replay an ancient rite of passage — opening day for the Long Beach’s Little League.

Hundreds of parents, friends and relatives of the ball players joined in the parade that went down Park Avenue to the Recreation Department’s baseball fields. They took part in a baseball carnival before the teams threw out first pitches on Monday.

Dozens of local businesses sponsor the teams and each team carried its sponsors’ banners as the throng made their down Long Beach's main thoroughfare followed by Long Beach fire engine trucks.
