Shark Off Long Beach Coast Bumps Kayaker: Report

The kayaker said he was fishing with a friend when the shark encounter occurred, the report says.

LONG BEACH, NY. — A Long Island fisherman was happy not to get a bite this weekend, as News 12 reported the man's kayak was bumped by a shark off the coast of Long Beach.

The man was fishing off the coast of Long Beach Saturday, the report said, when he felt something bump against his kayak. After realizing it was a shark, the report said, the man dumped his catch in the water in an effort to draw the shark away from him. The shark, however, kept coming back.

Thankfully, the report said, the men were able to flag down boats to help them get away from the shark safely.

The reported bump is hardly the first shark incident of the year on Long Island, after a suspected shark bite took place at Jones Beach in June and a dead shark washed ashore in Shirley in July. County and state officials reportedly beefed up their shark-spotting efforts this past summer, with drones and helicopters monitoring from the skies and shark-spotting crews keeping an eye out on land, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
