The new Operation Iraqi Freedom mirror will be dedicated at the post, located at 675 W. Park Ave., at 4 p.m. on March 24. The mirror will join a large existing mirror at the post that commemorates all of the key battles involving the United States from World War I to the Vietnam War.

“It will be unveiled on our wall accompanying all other major operations from WWI to present,” reads an announcement about the event on the VFW’s Facebook page.

At a later date, the VFW will dedicate a mirror commemorating battles in Afghanistan.

Commander Dan MacPhee told Patch that Sunday's event will come with food and festivities. “We should have a good crowd at the post,” he said. “The City of Long Beach has been notified, as well as other veterans organizations.”

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week. By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.
