Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- City officials announced the decision to drop the plans from a new homeless shelter in Chinatown. The shelter at 47 Madison St. was one of three planned shelters in that area, all of which have been met with heavy resistance from residents. The city announced that they intend to open this shelter in a different area with fewer services for the homeless. (WABC-TV)
- A mural has been planned for installation on the facade of the Apple Bank building at 465 Grand St. The nature-themed project, titled "Selva & Shadow," represents a collaboration between artists Elissa Levy, Vanessa Albury, and Virginia Inés Vergara. The project aims to draw attention towards the importance of nature and environmental awareness. (Bowery Boogie)
- A man dropped two dogs, and a cat from his 14-floor apartment before leaping from the Lower East Side building. The 51 year old leapt from 575 Grand St. at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Two of the animals died while one dog broke its legs, and the man was taken to Beth Israel Hospital in critical condition, where he died shortly after. (New York Post)
