93,000 People Apply For 104 Affordable Units On The LES: Report

93,000 people applied for just 104 affordable units at a forthcoming Essex Crossing apartment building.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — More than 90,000 people applied for about 100 affordable apartments at a forthcoming Essex Crossing building, DNAinfo reports.

The expansive development coming to the Lower East Side next year includes multiple residential buildings, in addition to a new hospital, Target and Trader Joe's. In the residential building at 145 Clinton St., the Site 5 of the Essex Crossing complex, 93,000 people applied for just 104 affordable units, city officials told DNAinfo.

The affordable units at the site included studio apartments starting at $516 a month, although there were just two units available at that price, reserved for residents making between $19,680 and $25,400 a year. Of the 104 homes, the largest chunk — 20 units — were two-bedrooms with a monthly rent of $1,065.

The process for an affordable housing lottery is a slow one: Applicants who are selected randomly for review will be invited for an interview if they meet the eligibility requirements for the units,

The expansive development at Essex Crossing will include at least 561 affordable apartments throughout all the different buildings and projects.
