Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- Police are searching for 55-year-old Shen Bin Weng, who is now considered a person of interest and potential suspect in the stabbing death of 58-year-old Qi Rui Weng on Monday. Responding officers found the victim with stab wounds across his body, and he was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. A video clip shows Shen Bin Weng walking south on Pike Street shortly after the incident. (WABC-TV)
- Police arrested a homeless activist and a handful of supporters during Wednesday's standoff at the Lower East Side's "Anarchy Row." Johnny Grima was eventually put in handcuffs at 3:58 p.m., after making it clear that he would rather be living on the street than in a shelter. The standoff attracted the likes of local Councilperson Carlina Rivera and her colleagues, all of whom are calling on Mayor Eric Adams to stop the sweeps of homeless encampments. (NY City Lens)
- Opponents of the sale of the Knickerbocker Village to L&M Development protested the deal in the cold weather at the end of March. The historic, Depression-era development falls under a rare affordable housing program called Article IV, and sits in a Two Bridges area under enormous development pressure. (The Village Sun)
