City To Host Wednesday Town Hall On Manhattan Jail Plan

The town hall was announced after Chinatown advocates slammed the city for a lack of community engagement on the proposal.

CHINATOWN, NY — City officials will host a town hall on a controversial proposal to move the Manhattan Detention Center to 80 Centre Street Wednesday after stunning local leaders who for months believed the borough's jail would expand at the existing Manhattan Detention Center.

The town hall will take place at P.S. 124 on Division Street between Bowery and the Manhattan Bridge at 6 p.m. on Sept. 12. Residents are asked to come armed with questions for city officials.

The town hall is the first of a series of public meetings the de Blasio administration plans to hold on the Lower Manhattan jail proposal. Another public hearing is slated for Sept. 27 at the Manhattan Borough President's office at 1 Centre Street at Chambers Street on the 19th floor at 6 p.m.
