Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:
- Chinatown's beloved dim sum parlors are facing a concerning labor shortage. The craft is exceedingly difficult to master, and labor-intensive, which has made it uncommon for young people to pursue the craft. Local eateries such as Jing Fong and Dim Sum Go Go are facing the impending shortage of skilled chefs, and many dim sum chefs currently working in New York City are in their 50s or 60s. (Eater NY)
- Many new stores on the Lower East Side are now selling cannabis, most of which have opened in the past six months. Within the area locally known as Hell's Square alone, there are over a dozen establishments now selling cannabis. Some are utilizing so called "digital art" to sell to buyers and including marijuana products as "gifts" along with their purchase. (Bowery Boogie)
- The 9/11 Memorial and Museum 5K run/walk has returned after a 2-year hiatus. Thousands of New Yorkers ran and walked through Lower Manhattan. The route that they took followed the path that rescue and recovery workers took 20 years ago down West Street to reach Ground Zero. (AMNY)
