🌱 Elderly Man Attacked Near Grand St. + Yonah Schimmel Scaffolding

Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. An 81-year-old man was sucker punched last Friday morning by a stranger he passed on the sidewalk. The elderly victim was walking near Columbia and Grand streets at approximately 8 a.m. when he was randomly attacked by the stranger. The victim suffered pain and swelling but did not require medical attention at the scene. The suspect fled in an unknown direction and remains at large. (NBC New York)
  2. The storefront of Yonah Schimmel Knishes has been covered by scaffolding since 2020 and is finally seeing the light of day. The business at 137 Houston St. had been covered by 8 stories of scaffolding while the neighboring property underwent demolition and reconstruction. The 112-year-old bakery is still going strong, despite their building going on sale for $6 million in 2021. (Bowery Boogie)
  3. A group of eight activists were arrested on Wednesday morning while trying to prevent homeless encampments across from Tompkins Square Park from being removed. The area known to local as "Anarchy Row," has been one of many subjects of the city's recent initiative to clear out homeless encampments throughout the city. Some advocated have called for Mayor Eric Adams to focus more on providing open beds in homeless shelters, and less on destroying these encampments. (Paywall: The New York Times)
