Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. A father was arrested for causing the death of his 4-month-old daughter earlier this week. At 10 a.m. on April 25, the NYPD responded to a 911 call regarding an infant at the NYU Hospital, and that the 4-month-old had been brought to the hospital by her family, unconscious and unresponsive. Further investigation revealed that the child had been injured at the family residence at the Vladeck houses at 376 Madison St. (AMNY)
  2. Community Board 2 voted in favor of a resolution on Tuesday to oppose plans for a Grand Street homeless shelter. The vote of 37-6 against aims to prevent a vacant hotel from becoming another shelter on the Lower East Side. The resolution is non-binding, though it will serve as a recommendation for city officials. (Spectrum News NY1)
  3. Early signs of foundation work have begun at the Starrett Corp's skyscraper development site. The planned 70-story structure at 259 Clinton St. will stand at 710 feet and yield 1,021 apartments. The developer filed foundation permits prior to gaining full approval for the project. (Bowery Boogie)
  4. Longtime shop in the East Village, Katinka, is raising funds to prevent going out of business. Owner Jane Williams launched a GoFundMe in an effort to raise $15,000 for back rent that accumulated during the pandemic. So far, the effort has raised over $8,000 towards the goal. (Patch)
