LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — A man was hospitalized with "traumatic injuries" on Sunday after being locked out of his room at a shelter and reportedly trying to get in by jumping from a fire escape to his window. The man jumped off a fifth-floor fire escape at the Lower East Side building and landed in an air shaft between the second and first floors, the New York Post reported. He survived the three-story fall but was transported to Bellevue Hospital with "traumatic injuries," the fire department told Patch in a statement.
The man, who lives in a Bowery Residents' Committee homeless shelter on Pitt Street, tried to jump to his apartment's window after being locked out. An anonymous police source told the Post that the man was "trying to human-fly to his window."
The fire department said in a statement that the call originally came in for someone with "altered mental status" at 3:36 p.m. on Sunday.
