Lowline Is Seeking Rising High School Juniors for Paid Internship Program

The historic underground park's internship program, Lowline Young Ambassadors, is still accepting applications until Sept. 16.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — Rising high school juniors now have a chance to be a part of an historic underground park project, the Lowline, that's being built in the next five years by scientists and engineering experts in the Lower East Side. The Lowline is going to be the world's first underground park that relies on modern solar technology to deliver sunlight underground without windows.

The Lowline's methods of delivering sunlight underground could have widespread international implications, if successful. Students going into their junior year of high school in September 2016 have a few more days to apply for the Lowline's paid six-month long internship program.

Here's how the Lowline's website describes the internship:

The Lowline Young Ambassadors Program will help prepare 16 rising juniors for careers and educational paths in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) related fields. Young Ambassadors will acquire, enhance, and refine their communication and leadership skills through participatory experiences such as facilitating community design charrettes, engaging visitors in the Lowline Lab and spearheading various design-based activities for families and school-based audiences. In addition, each Young Ambassador will be eligible to receive a scholarship for their participation in the program.

The online application says special consideration will be given to applicants who are referred by Lower East Side-based community organizations like Asian Americans for Equality, Chinese-American Planning Council, Educational Alliance, Grand Street Settlement, Henry Street Settlement, The Lower East Side Girls Club and University Settlement. The deadline to apply is Sept. 16.
