Here are the top stories today in Lower East Side-Chinatown:
- Nile Rodgers made a surprise appearance at Bar Chrystie at PUBLIC Hotel on Tuesday night. A crowd of 150 people were in attendance for the show, and music history lesson by the legendary performer. The show kicked off a new musical event series at Ian Schrager's hip hotel. (Guest of a Guest)
- Forlini’s has officially closed its doors, with a sign reading "Forlini’s has been sold. Thank you for memories!" The infamous Baxter street eatery had been a neighborhood staple since the 1950s, and has served generations of judges, lawyers, secretaries and other thanks to to its location. The family owned restaurant and building were sold for an undisclosed sum. (Paywall: The New York Times)
- The Henry Street Settlement has launched an oral history project, documenting the experiences of Lower East Side residents during the height of the pandemic. The project, titled “Hope & Resilience on the COVID Frontlines,” features 13 frontline workers and community members. By the summer of 2020, Henry Street Settlement had established three food pantries, a helpline, and an emergency cash assistance program, among other community-drive initiatives. (The Lo-Down)
