Rent Hike Forces Chinatown Häagen-Dazs To Shutter
The 41-year-old Mott Street ice cream parlor will serve its last scoops on Nov. 30.

CHINATOWN, NY — After more than 40 years in the neighborhood, the Mott Street Häagen-Dazs will close its doors in November, the World Journal reported.
The neighborhood staple has been struggling to make ends meet and now that the landlord aims to raise the ice cream parlor's rent — which is already more than $10,000 per month — management has decided to call it quits, the store's manager, Jason Liu, told the Chinese language newspaper.
Mounting costs leave the store paying a staggering nearly $20,000 per a month in fees and the owner, Chusheng Wong, who took over the business in 2010, simply can't handle a rent increase, forcing the unofficial Chinatown landmark to close, Liu told the World Journal.
