SEE IT: NYPD Rescue Man From Williamsburg Bridge
The tense 75-minute standoff ended with detectives lowering the man to safety in a harness.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NY — Police talked a man down from jumping to his death off the Williamsburg Bridge Sunday after a tense 75-minute standoff, officials said.
The shirtless-man climbed a beam on the span at about 9:30 a.m. and threatened to jump until detectives with the NYPD Emergency Service Unit calmed the man down enough to lower him to safety using a harness at about 10:45 a.m., police said.
Detective Thomas Longa and his partner received a call at 9:15 a.m. that an emotionally disturbed person had perched themselves on the bridge.

Longa and his partner, Detective Christopher Williams, rushed to the scene and scaled the bridge's walkway, engaging the “extremely emotionally distraught" man, Longa said at an NYPD news conference.
"I tried to establish a rapport with him and I also mentioned that nothing that's going on in his life would be worth ending it," Longa said at the Sunday conference.

"He was able to recognize he was going to get help. He was very thankful."
