Here are the top stories in Lower East Side-Chinatown today:

  1. New York City was declared under an "active-shooter situation" after a gunman opened fire at the 36th Street subway station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. At least 16 people were injured during the incident, 10 of whom suffered gunshot wounds. The extensive search for the gunman remained ongoing as of early Tuesday afternoon. (Patch)
  2. Protestors rallied on the morning of April 11 against construction fences that were placed around a portion of the Manhattan Detention Complex. The fences were erected at the intersection of Centre and White streets, in preparation for the proposed, larger jail in Chinatown. The organization Neighbors United Below Canal (NUBC), and its co-founder council member Christopher Marte, were among those opposing the creation of a “mega jail” in a community they said continues to suffer from the negative social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. (AMNY)
  3. Several Chinatown and Lower East Side tenants and neighborhood associations rallied Monday morning, calling on the Department of Buildings (DOB) to stop a developer from digging foundations in Two Bridges. Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou was among those in opposition to developer Joe Chetrit's plans for the construction of two 70-foot luxury apartment towers at 265 Cherry St. DOB Press Secretary Andrew Rudansky said that Chetrit is following the standard phased approval process for new construction.
