Cops: Robber Lured Man by Claiming Friend Needed Help

The man called and claimed the victim's friend needed his help Wednesday night in S. Hempstead, police said.

A man was lured from his home by a robber who claimed the victim’s friend was in need Wednesday night in S. Hempstead, according to Nassau County Police.

At 7 p.m., the 37-year-old victim received a call that his friend needed help, police said. The unknown caller said the friend was at Irene Street and Central Avenue, cops said.

When the victim got to the location, he was approached by a man with a handgun, police said. The man pointed the gun at the victim and demanded his keys and money, which the victim handed over along with his cellphone, cops said. The man fled north on foot on Central Avenue and left the victim uninjured, police said.

Authorities said the robber was 5-foot-8, in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black hat, white shirt, and blue shorts.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
